Welcome to Mobile Birding Week! Get ready for a week of bird-centered events celebrating the incredible birds that call Mobile home and all the fun, wonder, and joy that comes with birdwatching. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or simply curious to learn more about the birds in your own backyard, we hope join us!

REGISTRATION FOR MOBILE BIRDING WEEK EVENTS OPENS TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 1ST.


We’re grateful to the following partners for helping us bring Mobile Birding Week 2026 to life!


SUNDAY MORNING:

BIRD WALK-LANGAN PARK

This event is FREE, but registration is required! Capacity: 30

The fun begins with a relaxed bird walk around Langan Park. Wading and water birds can be spotted on or near the waters edge and the surrounding trees and shrubs provide habitat for a variety of songbirds. This is a great location to see a variety of birds and learn some fundamental ID techniques. We welcome all ages and birdwatching levels-especially beginners and bird curious! We will have limited pairs of binoculars available to borrow during the event.

Time: 8AM-10AM // Sunday October 4

Meeting Location: Mobile Museum of Art-4850 Museum Dr, Mobile, AL 36608

We will gather near the front entrance of the museum to begin the walk!

Parking: We recommend parking at the Mobile Museum of Art. The Museum is closed on Sunday’s so ample parking should be available.

Distance, Terrain, Amenities: We plan on covering approximately 1.25 miles during this walk, starting and ending at the museum. This may include paved walking path, boardwalk, and some occasional walking off trail in maintained grass areas with uneven terrain. There will be no restrooms available during this event.


SUNDAY EVENING:

BIRD WALK-THE BIRDS OF OAKLEIGH

This event is FREE, but registration is required! Capacity: 30

Well known for its historic homes and iconic sprawling live oaks, the Oakleigh neighborhood is also home to a variety of our beloved “backyard birds” if you know where to look! From woodpeckers to pigeons this walk will focus on the common birds we see around our neighborhoods and the fun of learning how to spot and identify them. This is a great opportunity to learn where and how to look for birds during your own neighborhood strolls. We welcome all ages and birdwatching levels-especially beginners and bird-curious! We will have limited pairs of binoculars available to borrow during the event. After the event, those interested can flock on over to Callaghan’s Irish Social Club and join us for a drink!

Time: 5:30PM-6:30PM // Sunday October 4

Meeting Location: Callaghan’s Irish Pub - 916 Charleston St, Mobile, AL 36604

We will gather out front-we’ll be the ones with the binoculars :)

Parking: There is ample street parking located on the blocks surrounding Callaghan’s.

This may include paved (possibly uneven) sidewalks, road, and some occasional walking off trail in maintained grass areas with uneven terrain. There will be no restrooms available during this event.

CALLAGHAN’S IRISH SOCIAL CLUB!*

No registration required! Seating on a first-come, first-served basis.

Beat the Sunday Scaries and join us for a post-birdwalk drink at Callaghan’s Irish Social Club! Once the Birds of Oakleigh walk concludes, we’ll flock over to Callaghans for a casual evening of drinks, conversation, and bird talk. There’s no formal program or activity-just a chance to meet other Mobile birders, swap stories, share your favorite local birding spots, and enjoy a drink together. Come hang out and make some new birding friends!

You do not have to be registered for the Birds of Oakleigh walk to attend this event.

Everyone is welcome. Bring a friend!

MONDAY EVENING:

SEMINAR AT WILD BIRDS UNLIMITED

“Attracting Birds to Your Backyard”

This event is FREE, but registration is required! Capacity: 30 *see note below*

 

Birdwatching can take you to beautiful places near and far, but sometimes the best birdwatching can be found right outside your own window! Come learn from local expert David Lohman of Wild Birds Unlimited Mobile about the feeders, food, birdbaths, and birdhouses that can help transform your yard into your own personal birdwatching paradise. Whether you’re looking to attract more birds to your home or transform your yard with native plants to create a natural landscape for birds, David will have tips and tricks to help you get there!

Note on Capacity: Due to store space there will only be 20 chairs available on a first-come, first-served basis. After that it will be standing room only.


TUESDAY EVENING:

PRESENTATION AT RED BEARD’S OUTFITTERS

“Protecting a future for Alabama’s Coastal Birds: The Alabama Coastal Bird Stewardship Program”

This event is FREE. There is no registration required required for this event.

Capacity: 60 *see note below*

Alabama’s coastline and white sandy beaches are more than just great places to fish, swim, and explore-they are also critical habitat for some of Alabama’s most vulnerable birds. During this presentation, Alabama Audubon Coastal Outreach Manager Cortney Weatherby will walk through the work of the Alabama Coastal Bird Stewardship Program. From protecting birds that nest on our beaches to diverse bird banding projects across the coast, come learn about the year-round work aimed at helping Alabama’s birds thrive and how you can help!

Note on Capacity: Due to space, there will only be 30 chairs available on a first-come, first-served basis. After that it will be standing room only.


WEDNESDAY EVENING:

TRIVIA W/ OLIVER AT BRAIDED RIVER BREWING

Put your knowledge to the test at Mobile Birding Week’s Trivia Takeover! Wednesday night Trivia with Oliver at Braided River Brewing is a well-known and well-loved weekly event in Mobile, and this week things are getting birdy! Join us for night of nature-themed trivia, cold drinks, and friendly competition. The evenings catergories will all have a nature-twist, but for three of the six rounds we’ll be getting birdy with it. Don’t worry, we won’t get too nerdy with the bird questions ;) (Maybe brush up on iconic Alabama birds, birds in music, media, and movies, or perhaps famous bird mascots!) There are some sweet prizes courtesy of Wild Birds Unlimited Mobile on the line so grab your friends and meet us there!

Time: 7:00PM-9:00PM // Wednesday October 7

Location: Braided River Brewing-420 St Louis St, Mobile, AL 36602

This is a special edition of a popular standing trivia night at Braided River Brewing.

This event is open to the public. Max capacity of 15-20 teams depending on space available at the brewery that night. Max 5 people per team.

There is no pre-registration for this event. Arrive early to secure your team’s spot!


THURSDAY EVENING:

BIRD WALK-THE BIRDS OF MIDTOWN

This event is FREE, but registration is required! Capacity: 25

We’re taking it to the sidewalks of Midtown! We’ll explore neighborhood streets, yards, and green spaces while looking and listening for the birds that call the canopies of Midtown home. This walk is a chance to slow down, connect with nature, and discover the birds hiding in plain sight right in the heart of Mobile. Want to know what hawk visits your backyard? Curious about the birds singing the dawn chorus outside your window every morning? Come join us for an evening stroll and find out! We welcome all ages and birdwatching levels-especially beginners and bird-curious! We will have limited pairs of binoculars available to borrow during the event. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and get ready to see Midtown from a whole new perspective!

Time: 5:30PM-7:00PM // Thursday October 8

Meeting Location: Murphy High School-100 S Carlen St, Mobile, AL 36606

We will gather near the front greenway of the school to begin the walk!

Parking: There is ample parking surrounding the school. We recommend the parking lot in the front of the school off of Carlen St (use the above address).

Distance, Terrain, Amenities: We plan on covering no more than 1.4 miles during this walk starting and ending at Murphy High School. This may include paved (possibly uneven) sidewalks, road, and some occasional walking off trail in maintained grass areas with uneven terrain. There will be no restrooms available during this event.


FRIDAY MORNING:

BIRD BANDING DEMO ATMOBILE BOTANICAL GARDENS

This event is FREE. There is no registration required for this event!

Join Alabama Audubon Science & Conservation Director for an up-close look at the science of bird banding! During the special Mobile Birding Week demonstration, you’ll have the opportunity to see how birds are safely captured, measured, and banded before being released back into the wild. Bird banding allows scientists & researchers to track bird movements and gain better understand on things like habitat needs, populations, and changing migration patterns. This is a unique chance to see birds up close and learn about the research Alabama Audubon is conducting along our coast! Bring a chair if you plan on staying for a while. This will be an entirely outdoor event, so dress and prepare accordingly. Mobile Botanical Gardens will also be hosting a plant sale that day, so be sure to stop by and check it out while you’re there!

Time: 8:00AM-10:00AM // Friday October 9

Location: Mobile Botanical Gardens-5151 Museum Dr, Mobile, AL 36608

We will be set up in the field directly inside the entrance to the gardens, look for the signs!

Parking: Park in the Mobile Botanical Gardens parking lot. Please note the gardens will be open to the public and the plant sale will be going on so parking may be limited.

Distance, Terrain, Amenities: This will be an entirely outdoor event, so dress and prepare accordingly. Bring a chair if you plan on staying for a while, there will be no seating provided. The banding table will be set up in the field directly inside the entrance to the gardens, approx 100 yards from the parking lot. Birds captured will be brought back to this area for viewing.

NOTE: While there is no admission fee to enter Mobile Botanical Gardens for the banding demonstration, if you choose to explore the gardens further you must pay the admission fee before doing so.


FRIDAY EVENING:

MOVIE NIGHT AT MOBILE BOTANICAL GARDENS

This event is FREE, but registration is required! Capacity: 50

Think birdwatching is a quiet hobby for retirees? Think again! Join us for a screening of “Listers: A Glimpse into Extreme Birdwatching”, an entertaining and eyeopening documentary that takes viewers down the rabbit hole of the competitive side of birding.

Parent/Guardian Note: This is recommended as an 18+ event. Please be aware that Listers is intended for adult audiences and does contain profanity and adult humor.

The film follows brothers Owen and Quentin Reiser as they embark on a “Big Year”—a year-long quest to see as many different bird species as possible. Living out of a minivan and crisscrossing the country in pursuit of birds, the brothers get an entertaining behind-the-scenes look at the highs, lows, quirks, and downright absurdity of extreme birdwatching. Along the way, the film explores what drives people to chase birds, keep lists, and compete—and ultimately asks what it really means to find joy in a hobby.

Popcorn, soft drinks, and water will be provided. Grab a friend and join us for a night of birds, laughs, and a night of celebrating just how fun (and absurd!) birding can be! Chairs will be provided but if want to BYO comfy lawn chair you can.

Time: Doors Open @ 6PM. Movie starts @ 6:45PM.

We will be meeting in the classroom past the gift shop. Look for the signs!

Parking: Park in the Mobile Botanical Gardens parking lot and proceed to the main gate.

NOTE: While this is a free event, we are encouraging a $5 donation at the door to go towards Mobile Botanical Gardens to help preserve the habitat they provide for Mobile birds!

OKPLOVERFEST! AT BRAIDED RIVER BREWING

Alabama Audubon will be hosting its 3rd annual Okploverfest conservation celebration on Saturday October 10th to wrap up Mobile Birding Week! Come by Braided River Brewing between 3-7pm and join us in raising a glass to the feathered friends that make coastal Alabama so special.
