Birding at Ruffner Mountain: Eastern Trailhead (Free!)

The eastern trailhead and wetlands at Ruffner Mountain is one of Birmingham's greatest birding spots, and fall migration will be in full swing! A wide variety of migrants and permanent residents should be present: lots of warblers (some in their autumn alternate plumage), vireos, thrushes, woodpeckers, and more, possibly with rarities like the Philadelphia Vireo or Golden-winged Warbler.

MEETING PLACE & LOCATION: We'll meet at McDonald's (1569 Montclair Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210) at 7 AM, then carpool to the nearby Ruffner Mountain Eastern Trailhead (2002-1942 Ruffner Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210).

Parking at the trail entrance is limited and requires a $5 fee or membership with Ruffner Mountain.

TARGET SPECIES: Warblers (this is a particularly good location for Tennessee Warblers), vireos, thrushes, woodpeckers, and more.possibly with rarities like the Philadelphia Vireo or Golden-winged Warbler.

Accessibility: We will walk more than 2 miles on mostly flat gravel, dirt, and hard-packed surfaces that may be uneven or include obstacles like ruts, roots, and rocks that may not be accessible for all people.

Registration is free but required.
