The Great Backyard Bird Count at the Birmingham Zoo (Free!)

Eastern Towhee by Greg Harber

Join us as we celebrate the Great Backyard Bird Count with our friends at The Birmingham Zoo! We will gather near the Children's Zoo entrance and depart from there for a walk on the Zoo's property. We'll spend most of our time in the wooded areas along the perimeter of the zoo, with a stop at the wetland/retention pond on the west side of the zoo. We'll keep a tally of the birds we see and/or hear and submit our results to the GBBC database.

Meeting Place & Time: We will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Birmingham Zoo, Children's Zoo entrance (to the right of the main entrance).

Birmingham Zoo Address: 2630 Cahaba Road, Birmingham, AL 35223, United States

Target Bird Species: We expect to see a variety of winter songbirds on our walk today, including Winter Wrens, Golden- and/or Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and resident Red-headed Woodpeckers. Red-shouldered Hawks are frequent in the area so we will likely encounter this noisy bird.

Field Trip Leader: Greg Harber (205) 807-8055. Please only contact the field trip leader on the day of the event for questions and concerns.

This event is free, but registration is required.

Accessibility: Travel distance will be up to 1 mile on mostly flat pavement that is accessible, with resting spots and restrooms on site. The behind-the-scenes portion may not be accessible and will leave the pathway where the terrain will be uneven.
