Alabama Audubon members will be treated to a tour of the new facility by the center's Executive Director, Travis Langen, who was recruited from California's Catalina Island to develop programming for the Eco Center and oversee the facility's construction. The setting includes Upland Scrub and Classic Pine Savannah areas, and Langen is a plant expert who will gladly point out plants along the way. There are also two large chimney swift towers on the property. Alabama Audubon's Executive Director, Scot Duncan, and Coastal Outreach Manager, Cortney Weatherby, will participate in the tour and help you spot some of the dozens of species in the area.
Make sure your Alabama Audubon membership is current so that you can participate in this special private tour of the brand-new facility being built for the Gulf Coast Center for Ecotourism and Sustainability. With a $13.4 million grant of funds set aside after the BP oil spill, the Eco Center will be a state-of-the-art destination for conservationists. It will feature a Farm & Garden Complex, an Art Center, Habitat Restoration demonstrations, a Bicycle Hub, a wetlands lab, an event space, and a challenge course.
Its mission is to promote sustainable tourism, raise environmental awareness, and encourage the stewardship of natural resources in order to increase community resilience, strengthen the coastal economy, and enhance the quality of life of the residents and visitors of the Gulf Coast Region.
Meet-up Location: We will meet in the parking lot of the Gulf Coast Eco Center.
