Nature at Noon // Red Mountain Park (Venice Rd. entrance) (Free!)

  • Red Mountain Park 2019 Venice Road Birmingham, AL, 35211 United States (map)

Description : Join us for our monthly Nature @ Noon event with our friends at Red Mountain this April! Every month, we offer an opportunity to participate in an hour-long, Friday lunchtime walk that explores different locations of the state and its nature each month.

The April walk will be led by our executive director, Dr. Scot Duncan, and Program Coordinator, Andrew Lydeard. Follow Scot and Andrew along as they travel the one of the trails in search of spring migrants! The first wave of migratory songbirds and raptors will begin staging, breeding, and passing through our area as the trees begin to green out and caterpillars emerge. We will travel as a group from the Venice Road Entrance along the slope of the mountain. We'll scan the skies for hawks that have begun pushing north as well as listen for singing birds seeking a mate for the breeding season. As always, birders of all skills levels are welcome to join!

TRIP LEADER: Your trip leader will be Andrew Lydeard and can be reached at andrew@alaudubon.org or at 703-606-8956. Please reach out by phone only on the day of the event.

TRAVEL INFORMATION : Meeting Time and Place
We will meet in the parking lot of the Venice Road entrance of Red Mountain Park at 12:00pm and work slowly along adjacent trails in search of migrant and breeding bird species in the area.

Parking Address:
Red Mountain Park
2019 Venice Rd, Birmingham, AL 35211

Accessibility : We will meet in the parking lot off of Venice Road and travel as a group for an 'Out-and-Back' consisting of about 0.5 miles on the trail before turning back to the parking lot. The trail is made of gravel / dirt and moderately sloped and may have obstacles such as sticks, rocks, holes, or other debris not suitable for all people. There are benches and restrooms available in the parking lot, and parking should be ample. Please reach out to your leader prior to the event, so that we may accommodate any accessibility needs before the program. Loaner Vortex binoculars can be supplied if needed. As always, remember to bring plenty of water, snacks, insect repellent, sun screen, and wear seasonally appropriate attire.
