MAPS Bird Banding Program at Ruffner Mountain

  • Ruffner Mountain - Eastern Trailhead 1942 Ruffner Road Birmingham, AL, 35210 United States (map)

Join Jefferson County Greenways and Alabama Audubon to see birds up close as scientists document Ruffner Mountain’s summer bird community through bird banding—the capture, measurement, and release of wild birds.

Our organizations have partnered to participate in the Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship (MAPS) program, a continent-wide conservation effort to monitor bird survival and reproductive success. You will get an up-close and personal viewing of the bird banding process, learn the importance of this research program, and what data has been collected this summer.

  • Be prepared to walk approximately 2 miles on flat terrain.

  • Bring binoculars if you have them – but we’ll have extras to loan out for the event.

  • Bring water and prepare appropriately for the day’s weather.
