NATURE@NOON

ON THE COAST / A BIRDWALK IN DAPHNE’S VILLIAGE POINT PRESERVE

FREE WITH REGISTRATION / SPACE IS LIMITED
REGISTRATION CLOSES THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26 AT 12AM

Join our Coastal staff for a free lunchtime walk as we explore Village Park Preserve. The park boasts a diversity of habitats that hold migrating warblers, buntings, thrushes, and other songbirds. Cooler fall temperatures have brought the arrival of some of our favorite winter bird species, including Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers—but there is still a chance to see some late-season migrants!

If you are interested in learning how to identify some of the common birds that call Baldwin and Mobile county home, this is a great place to start. We will begin our walk at the Village Point Preserve parking lot trailhead, scan the pine trees for gnatcatchers and chick-a-dees, and then continue to seek out songbirds as we take the main gravel trail towards the beach.

We will take the boardwalk out to the pier to talk about the differences found in terns and gulls as we scan for wading and shorebirds. The walk back will take us through swamp-esque bottoms, where woodpeckers like to regularly congregate, before heading back to the parking lot.

All ages and birding levels are welcome. We will have binoculars available to borrow.

NEED-TO-KNOW

  • REMEMBER As always, remember to bring plenty of water and wear seasonally appropriate attire.

  • DETAILS Parking is free at Village Point Preserve, but the parking lot can fill up quickly. Additional parking can be found across Main Street if necessary, but please be respectful to the businesses. This will be a brief one-hour walk. There are restrooms located at the parking lot area but not within the preserve.

  • REQUIRED Participants must complete the mandatory online waiver when registering. Please do not request registration for others when submitting your request.

  • ACCESSIBILITY Much of this walk will be on gravel pathways and boardwalks. We do not plan on walking down the beach. There is one section of the trail that is dirt with some tree roots and a small incline that some people may find challenging.

  • CANCELLATION In the event of inclement weather, or if you need to cancel at the last minute, please text your trip leader, as the main office will be closed.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION

Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
