NATURE@NOON

A BIRDWALK AT PINSON’S TURKEY CREEK NATURE PRESERVE

FREE WITH REGISTRATION / SPACE IS LIMITED
REGISTRATION CLOSES THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22 AT 12AM

Join us for our February Nature@Noon walk at the beautiful Turkey Creek Nature Preserve in northern Birmingham. Every month, we offer an opportunity to participate in an hour-long, Friday lunchtime walk that explores different locations of the state and its nature each month.

Turkey Creek Nature Preserve is a 466-acre sanctuary that boasts a rich history dating back to prehistoric Native American inhabitants and the birth of industry in Alabama. The preserve is an important habitat for seven federally protected species, making it a critical conservation area in the country, and is one of the pristine gems in the Appalachian Highland Birding Trail.

As spring approaches, this is a great time to begin learning songs of resident birds that have begun singing for the breeding season. Join us for an easy to moderate walk along the creek as we search for Eastern Towhees scratching in the leaf litter or listen for Carolina Wrens serenading the woodlands with their sweet songs.

We’ll also search for some of the winter birds that will begin departing the south soon: Golden and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrushes, and Cedar Waxwings could all be around! Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a bird watcher, or just someone looking for a peaceful retreat, this month’s Nature@Noon at Turkey Creek is certain to brighten your week!

  • DETAILS We will walk no more than half a mile on the main road, which is easy to moderate terrain with some gradual rising and falling that may not be suitable for all people. While the road is paved, there may be uneven or wet surfaces or weather conditions that may increase chances of falling.

Turkey Creek Nature Preserve has free entry and parking, but donations are welcomed. There are portapotties available near the parking area.

  • REQUIRED Participants must complete the mandatory online waiver when registering. Please do not request registration for others when submitting your request.

  • ACCESSIBILITY The walk will be on paved, mostly flat asphalt. There is a slight incline and decline in the parking lot that may not be suitable for all people.

  • CANCELLATION In the event of inclement weather, or if you need to cancel at the last minute, please text your trip leaders, as the main office will be closed.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION

Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
