NATURE@NOON
A BIRDWALK IN BIRMINGHAM’S RED MOUNTAIN PARK
FREE WITH REGISTRATION / SPACE IS LIMITED
REGISTRATION CLOSES THURSDAY, APRIL 11 AT 12AM
Every month, we offer an opportunity to participate in an hour-long, Friday lunchtime walk that explores different locations of the state and its nature each month.
Our April Nature@Noon walk will be at Red Mountain Park in Birmingham. We will explore portions of this 1,500-acre urban park that is not only rich in biodiversity but also steeped in history. We will be meeting at the entrance and parking lot on Venice Road, NOT the main entrance off Frankfurt Drive. Our walk will be co-led by the Red Mountain Park's Membership Director, Lauren Spalding, who will share fascinating insights about the park's history and its ties and importance to the mining industry. Additionally, we will discuss how these mining operations can impact wildlife, water resources, and native ecosystems.
Our walk will start in the main parking lot to scan the powercuts for birds like Indigo Buntings, Blue Grosbeaks, and American Goldfinches. Red-tailed Hawks are often seen perched in this area as they scan the fields below for mice.
We will walk a short ways along the trail into the woods, listening and looking for migrants that are moving into our area. The wooded trails are great places to hear and see Red-eyed Vireos, Northern Parulas, and Black-and-White Warblers, and the stream crossings nearby provide ample water and food for hungry migratory birds. We will walk a few hundred yards into the trails before returning to the parking area at 1pm.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION
Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
