RUSSELL BAILEY

LABOR DAY MEMORIAL BIRD WALK

REGISTRATION CLOSED / AT CAPACITY

Join us for our annual half-day event celebrating the life and legacy of Birmingham birder Russell Bailey. Over the years, Russ dedicated countless Labor Days to impromptu field trips in pursuit of southbound migrants. Help continue the tradition with this half-day beginner bird walk through the various habitats of the 37-acre Birmingham Botanical Gardens. One of the best and most-visited sites for songbirds in the Birmingham area, we will visit most of the two dozen gardens and many water features that attract birds.

We expect to see both year-round birds as well as fall migrants, including warblers, vireos, tanagers, orioles, towhees, hummingbirds, cardinals, grosbeaks, flycatchers, nuthatches, wrens, sparrows, finches, swifts, woodpeckers, sapsuckers, blackbirds, kingfishers, thrushes, phoebes, wood-pewees, raptors, and possibly herons.

Because of the variety of habitat, the gardens offer a great way for beginners to learn many different birds—all ages and abilities are welcome!

EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION

Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
