As autumn straddles winter in mid-November, we’ll head to a pair of fruitful birding sights in northern Alabama. Beginning at the riparian habitats of the Hays Nature Preserve along the Flint River, we’ll then travel to the field ecosystems of the Alabama A&M Research Station. Past November trips to these two locations have netted over 50 species.
The birds: We can expect to see a good number of early wintering waterfowl, numerous woodpecker species, and field birds like Eastern Meadowlark, Loggerhead Shrike, and American Kestrel.
Meeting Time and Location: We’ll meet at 7:00am at McDonald's, 239 Howell St, Fultondale, AL 35068, then reconvene at Winfred-Thomas Agricultural Research Station HQ, (372 Walker Ln, Hazel Green, AL 35750) at 9:15am.
After touring the Research Station, we’ll break for lunch (bring your own) before heading to Hays Nature Preserve (7161 US-431, Owens Cross Roads, AL 35763)
Accessibility: Alabama A&M Research Station will involve mostly driving, stopping at various points to get out and observe birds, with minimal walking. Hays Nature Preserve has a paved path from the parking lot that goes all the way through. Port-a-potties are located at this location.
