Loggerhead Shrike Outing

  • Alabama Audubon Office 1014 Whelan Street Greensboro, AL, 36744 United States (map)

Cost: $35

Capacity: 16

Have you ever been traveling down a country road and noticed a small animal or insect impaled on a barbed wire fence? Then you have witnessed the work of the Loggerhead Shrike! Join us as we go in search of the "butcher of the grasslands," a predatory songbird!

Led by avid birder, artist, and Shrike Force member, Michelle Reynolds, we will learn about this increasingly endangered bird, and see how it earned its gruesome reputation by impaling their prey on thorns and barbed wire fences for later consumption.

ACCESSIBILITY Shrikes and larder are easily observed from your car, and this trip is highly accessible to birders who face mobility challenges.

TRIP LEADERS Michelle Reynolds and Tim Higgins / tim@alaudubon.org

MEETING TIME AND PLACE  We will meet at Alabama Audubon’s Greensboro office and then caravan to a few locations in the area where shrikes, fledglings, and larder have recently been observed.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
