Description : Alabama Point East in the winter is a unique birding experience thanks to the fast moving waters around Perdido Pass. We will start by searching the surrounding parking area for loggerhead shrikes then as we head through the dunes we will keep an eye out for sparrows and any passing hawks/raptors. Once we arrive on the beach we will turn our attention to shorebirds like snowy plover, Wilsons plover, ruddy turnstones, and mixed flocks of terns.
The group will spend a significant amount of time walking on the beach with the goal of making it nearby the jetties to search for scoters, gannet, mergansers, and loons. Throughout the trip Alabama Audubon staff and partners will also spend time talking about the importance of the site during the summer for beach nesting birds within the state.
This will be a trip suitable for all birding levels. We will move slowly through the habitat and spend a good amount of time scoping birds on the beach and in the nearby waters. There will be multiple scopes available for viewing and binoculars to borrow.
LOCATION DETAILS : We will meet under the pavilions by the parking lot. Restrooms are available at the parking lot. There is a small parking fee at this location.
