Big Half Day: Marion Fish Hatchery/ Perry Lakes Park

  • Marion Fish Hatchery Marion Fish Hatchery Marion AL 36756 United States (map)

Cost: $50

Capacity: 15

LOCATION DESCRIPTION / In-person: Join us this September for a half-day adventure into Perry County to tally as many species as we can during walks through the Marion Fish Hatchery and Perry Lakes Park. Fall migration will be at its peak, and everything from warblers, vireos, thrushes, waders, shorebirds, and raptors are on the move - it's the perfect day for a Big Half Day! We will be led by Program Coordinator Andrew Lydeard through the impoundments around the hatchery before we move into the woods of Perry Lakes Park to search for woodland migrants.

Marion Fish Hatchery is responsible for the management of some of Alabama's most imperiled fish species, and the ponds provide grassland, scrub, wetlands, and shorebird foraging habitat that is great for a huge mix of birds including Sora, Bald Eagles, Semipalmated Plovers, Sedge Wrens, and much more! After we walk for a couple of hours through the hatchery, we'll move to the dense woodlands and bottomland forest of the Cahaba River in Perry Lakes Park. This location is ideal for birds such as Swainson's Thrushes, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Black-throated Green Warblers, and Wood Ducks features a 100 foot birding tower that participants can climb for incredible views!

LOCATION DETAILS / In-person: There is ample parking and admission is free to entry the properties. Restrooms are available at Perry Lakes Park, but the facilities are primitive at best, so please plan accordingly.
