Harrison Lake // Maplesville (Free!)

  • Meeting place Maplesville at the Senior Citizens’ Center 9499 Alabama 22 Maplesville, AL, 36750 United States (map)

Description : This trip takes us to Harrison Lake in Maplesville, a large pond near a river which attracts winter waterfowl and year-round species. The area around the pond has an unobstructed view of the entire site and is an excellent spot for bird spotting. Carpooling is strongly recommended, as the parking is limited at the pond (see the details section below).

The group may be split at times if needed. We may find herons, but more likely, wintering woodland birds such as kinglets, sapsuckers, and winter warblers. All types of winter waterfowl are possible, and wintering woodland birds, such as kinglets, sparrows, and winter warblers. Expect to see several kinds of ducks, with wading birds and wintering woodland birds in the nearby forest edges. The surrounding fields will be surveyed for grassland birds such as sparrows, meadowlarks, harriers, and bluebirds. Bald eagles have been seen in the tall trees near the lake and snipe on the mud flats. Soaring birds of prey may be drawn to the wetlands or adjacent fields. After viewing the waterfowl from the parking areas, the trail around the lake and grasslands will allow for a slow walk of an hour or two.

LOCATION DETAILS : Though only a half-day trip, you might wish to pack a lunch or bring snacks. Remember to bring plenty of water, a full tank of gas, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire, including boots. We plan to finish in the early afternoon. There are restaurant options in the area where we end our trip.

TRAVEL INFORMATION : Meetup is 9:00 a.m. in Maplesville at the Senior Citizens’ Center

Address: 9499 Alabama Highway 22, Maplesville, 36750, on Hwy 22 at the railroad tracks. It’s the Old Southern Depot and has a sign in front. Plan to carpool from this location, as there is minimal parking at Harrison Lake. In the event of inclement weather, the trip may be cancelled. Check your e-mail for late updates.

TRIP LEADERS: Matt Hunter (205-460-9546) and Hans Paul (205-807-7357) will lead this trip. Please contact them only on the day of the field trip.

Accessibility : We will be traveling as a group no more than two miles around the lake, fields, and woodland edges of the property. Much of the terrain is uneven, muddy, and may pose hazards to some people. As with all outdoor activities, obstacles such as roots, rocks, and other debris may present and create situations that are not suitable for all people. If you have specific accessibility needs or questions, please reach out to your leaders, so that they can  accommodate you to the best of their ability
