Field Trip: Cherokee Rock Village (Free)

  • Chickfila 1648 Montclair Road Irondale, AL, 35210 United States (map)

Cost: $8.00

Capacity: 30

LOCATION DESCRIPTION / In-person: Towering above Leesburg, Alabama (the Paris of the South), Cherokee Rock Village features monumental boulder formations, mature pine-oak-hickory forest, and spectacular views to the east and nearby Weiss Lake. Its fame, to the extent that is a thing, stems from it being a destination for rock climbers, who travel great distances to do bouldering there. But for our purposes, it's a spectacular place for hawk-watching in the Fall, and the woods are generally productive for songbirds, woodpeckers, and the like. We stand a chance at logging several species of early winter visitants, along with the resident species, and we hope, some fall migrants.

MEETING PLACE, AND TIME: We will meet at 7 am in Birmingham near the Chick-Fil-A at 1648 Montclair Rd. Or you may elect to meet at the Jack's Hamburgers at 5375 CR 68 in Collinsville at about 8:15.

LOCATION DETAILS / In-person: There is a modest admission fee to the park, ~$8/car.

The park does have restrooms, and there are concessions there. Still, pack a lunch and bring sunscreen, insect repellent, water, any other drinks you may favor, snacks, badminton racquets (not really; just wanted to see if you were paying attention), and elephant bells (got you again)

TRIP LEADER Your trip leader for this event will be Paul Franklin / (205) 542-7647

ACCESSIBILITY: Cherokee Rock Village is just that -- rocky. Most of our walking will be along relatively-level or gently-sloping paths. But we will be on grassy and uneven, rocky terrain. The walking will not be at all difficult or strenuous, but some of the walking will be on raw earth or otherwise unimproved paths

REMEMBER This is a daylong affair, so plan accordingly and bring plenty of drinks and snacks in addition to a full tank of gas, insect repellent, rain gear, and appropriate summer attire, a hat and sunblock.

REQUIRED Participants must complete the mandatory online waiver when registering. Please do not request registration for others when submitting your request.

CANCELLATION The event will only be canceled in the event of hazardous conditions. If you need to cancel at the last minute, please email or text your trip leaders.

Please continue joining Alabama Audubon as a member or donor to help us continue to offer accessible, educational programs and events across the state. Your generosity enables us to advance research, education, and advocacy efforts to protect birds in Alabama and beyond.
