Beginner Birding with Alabama Audubon (Free!)

  • Meeting Place- Entrance to Preserve 3600 Waverly Parkway Opelika, AL, 36801 United States (map)

Free! Don’t worry about binoculars! We have some you can borrow!

20 Spots

Description: Join Alabama Audubon and Program Coordinator Andrew Lydeard for a Beginner Birder Field Trip to Wood Duck Nature Preserve (also known as Wood Duck Heritage Preserve and Siddique Nature Park) as we explore winter birding in Lee County, AL. We will be joined by local birding expert and Alabama Audubon board member, Barry Fleming, for our journey as we make our way along the trail of the preserve and to the observation blind at the end of the trail.

This location is one of the most reliable places in the state to find wintering waterfowl, wading birds, and songbirds and always has a variety of interesting species to observe and enjoy, including some of the best views of Wood Ducks and other waterfowl. Barry and Andrew will provide tips, answer questions, and point out everything by site and sound that the preserve has to offer. New and bird-curious birders are encouraged to join. However, birders of all skill sets are always welcomed - the more eyes, the better! Loaner binoculars are available for those who need them!

Possible Species:

Wood Ducks (of course!)

Ring-necked Ducks

Blue and Green-winged Teal

Sora

Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets

Hermit Thrush

Blue-headed Vireo

Yellow-rumped Warblers

Trip Leader: Your trip leader will be Andrew Lydeard / Program Coordinator and can be reached at andrew@alaudubon.org or at 703-606-8956. Please reach out by phone only on the day of the event.

Meeting Time and Place
We will meet at the entrance of the preserve and travel as a group to the observation blinds.
Address:
3600 Waverly Pkwy, Opelika, AL 36801

Accessibility :
We will meet at the entrance of the trailhead and travel about 2 miles total as a group to the pond at the back of the park. The trails are flat but may contain hazards such as rocks, roots, and other debris that may not be suitable for all people.

Benches are limited on the trail until the observation blind at the end. As always, remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, bug spray and wear seasonally appropriate attire. If you require certain accessibility needs or have questions about the trip, please reach out to your leader, so that we can try our best to accommodate you for the event.
