CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT 2023
IT’S A TEAM EFFORT AND WE NEED YOUR HELP
Take heed, all ye who fancy birds, for an opportunity awaits to allow you to put your love of birds into action; because this December 23rd we will once again take a day out of our holiday festivities to locate and tally all the birds we can possibly find within our designated 15-mile count circle.
This is clearly a herculean task, and thus we need the help of intrepid volunteer birders—such as yourself—to spend all or part of their day in one or another of those sections, scrounging around for birds. It’s just like a party. But outdoors. With no catering. Or anything.
That circle, as it has been passed down through time immemorial, centers on the Water Works filter plant on US 280 and extends 7.5 miles in all directions. We have cleverly divided that circle into eight sections, and one “bonus” area at Red Mountain Park, each of which is assigned to a party leader, who is to coordinate the count in his/her/their/its area.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
ANYONE & EVERYONE
You don’t need to be an expert to participate in the CBC. We love new faces. And you don’t have to be an “expert” either—whether your skills are those of a beginner, intermediate, or advanced birder, you are invited to join the count. So if you’re interested, come on out and join us. We’d love to have you!
INTERESTED IN JOINING?
Use the map here to pick the area of your preference, then contact the party leader assigned to the area. If they have room in their party to accommodate you, they will provide details about their meeting time and place for the count day. If their party is full and they can’t accommodate you, go back to the map and choose another party and contact that leader.
Any questions or problems? Contact Paul Franklin and he will help place you in an appropriate birding party for that day: phfranklin36@gmail.com / (205) 542-7647

EQUITY, DIVERSITY, & INCLUSION
Through more than seventy-five years of conservation work in one of our nation’s most ecologically rich states, Alabama Audubon has seen firsthand how diversity strengthens natural communities. This same principle applies to human communities, which is why our organization is committed to providing equitable and inclusive opportunities for all Alabamians to learn about and enjoy wild birds, their habitats, and the natural world. One of the best ways to support that belief is by valuing and actively seeking to strengthen diversity among our staff, our board, and our membership. To that end, Alabama Audubon welcomes everyone to participate in our work, and strives to make our programs, classes, and events welcome, inclusive, and accessible to all.
