Gosse Nature Walk #1: Avondale Park

Join Dr. Ansel Payne, Teaching Naturalist, as he inaugurates a new educational series for the Birmingham community. Named for Philip Henry Gosse’s early work on Alabama flora and fauna, Birmingham Audubon’s Gosse Nature Walks are free, public nature explorations that cover a variety of natural history topics, from birds to plants to geological features, at locations throughout the city.

Gosse Nature Walk #1 takes us to a beloved bit of green space just down the street from the BAS offices: Avondale Park. One of BAS’s three Urban Bird Habitat Initiative sites, Avondale hosts a surprisingly rich collection of woodland birds, interesting geology, and newly established native plantings. It’s also close to some of the best restaurants and coffee shops in the area! Come meet us Friday morning at the Avondale Rose & Habitat Garden on 40th Street South, just behind the public library (GPS coordinates: 33.520281, -86.773146).

As always, Gosse Nature Walks are open to all ages and experience levels; just remember to wear appropriate clothing and walking shoes, and to bring essential outdoor provisions like sunscreen, insect repellent, and water. We’ll provide the binoculars and field guides!
