Swallow-tailed kites are among the most striking of all birds, and their graceful flight is a sight to behold. Although they breed in southern swamps and riparian areas, they undergo a post-breeding dispersal that takes them well north of their breeding range. During this program, Eric will discuss the status of the swallow-tailed kite in Alabama and the results of a 2009-2011 survey of roost sites in the state. Regular attendees on our summer trips will especially enjoy this program.
Programs are held at the Alabama Wildlife Center at Oak Mountain State Park, and the adjacent Oak Mountain Interpretive Center. Admission to the park is adult: $5 (12+), seniors (62+): $2, and children under 3: no charge. ATN programs are free. Come early to enjoy refreshments at the Alabama Wildlife Center and the birds at the feeders, then, when it is time for the program we will proceed to the auditorium.
The 2015-2016 Season of Audubon Teaches Nature is co-sponsored by the Birmingham Audubon Society, the Alabama Wildlife Center, the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center and the Friends of Oak Mountain.
During this twenty-fifth year of Audubon Teaches Nature we will explore and celebrate the diversity of Alabama’s natural history. These seminars will provide you with the knowledge and skills to allow you to more fully enjoy your time in the field, whether birding, botanizing, hiking or biking. Audubon Teaches Nature will give you the unique opportunity to meet and learn from some of Alabama’s leading naturalists and authorities who are willing to share their years of experience and special knowledge to make your outdoor experiences more enjoyable. Our programs are designed to showcase the beauty and natural history of Oak Mountain State Park and the central Alabama region.
