Gosse Nature Walk #25: Freshwater Land Trust’s High Ore Line Trail, Midfield

Our twenty-fifth Gosse Nature Walk takes us to the new Freshwater Land Trust High Ore Line Trail. This greenway runs for nearly two miles along a former railroad grade that Tennessee Coal and Iron used to transfer ore from Red Mountain to their furnace in Ensley. The bridges along the route offer fantastic views of Valley Creek and the Bessemer Super Highway.
The High Ore Line Trail opened in August 2019, starting in Midfield at Jefferson County Western Health Center and tying into Red Mountain Park’s new entrance and parking lot on Venice Road. It is part of the Red Rock Trail System—a network of trails, parks, bike lanes, and sidewalks created by Freshwater Land Trust in conjunction with their partners with the goal of connecting 750 miles of trails in Jefferson County.
Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible. There is a little bit of an incline initially to get to the trail, though not very steep. The trail is paved and mostly flat.

The details: Meet up is at noon in the parking lot at the Jefferson County Department of Health – Western Health Center (631 Bessemer Super Hwy., Birmingham). You’ll want to park closer to Doctor MLK Jr. Drive in the corner of the parking lot. Click here for a pin on Google Maps to where we suggest parking (33.453605, -86.925592). There is a sidewalk connector that will lead to the trail, and it’s about a five minute walk to the start of the trail, which runs along past the Midfield storm shelter.
As always, remember to bring plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. Since part of this trip involves a moderate walk, comfortable shoes are a must.
