Russ Bailey Memorial Beginner Bird Walk
September 2, 2019, 7:00 am–12:00 pm

Join us for our annual half-day event celebrating the life and legacy of Birmingham birder Russ Bailey. Over the years, Russ dedicated countless Labor Days to impromptu field trips in pursuit of southbound migrants, a tradition that continues with this great half-day beginner bird walk to Ruffner Mountain. All ages and abilities welcome!
The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. at the main Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve parking lot (1214 81st St. S., Birmingham), located on the northwestern face of the mountain, at the far end of 81st Street South. As always, remember to bring plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. Since part of this trip involves a moderate walk up the mountain side, good walking shoes are a must.
In the case of inclement weather, the event may be cancelled. You may contact the trip leader the morning of the event if the weather is questionable.
Accessibility: Ruffner’s parking lot and deck are wheelchair accessible. Some trails are an easy to moderate hike with uneven terrain, but much birding can be done from the lot and deck.
Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.
The birds: Participants will enjoy good odds for neotropical migrants, including warblers, vireos, tanagers, and broad-winged hawks. You can check out the latest eBird checklists for Ruffner here and learn more about this popular #Birdingham spot on the Appalachian Highlands Birding Trail.
Trip leader: Greg Harber (205-807-8055, day of field trip only)
