Philip Henry Gosse—the English naturalist and GNW namesake who described Alabama’s Black Belt ecology in the 1830s—would have turned 209 years old this Saturday, April 6th. We’ll celebrate his legacy as we host the twenty-second installation of our Gosse Nature Walk Series at Vulcan Park, with special guest Carolyn Buck, Freshwater Land Trust’s Red Rock Trail System Director.

The Kiwanis Vulcan trail is a 2-mile jogging and biking trail extending to Green Springs Highway and serving as the future hub for Birmingham’s planned 750-mile Red Rock Trail System.

The details: Meetup will be at noon in the parking lot off of Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. S. beneath Vulcan (located approximately between 1867 and 1871 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. S.) There is limited parking here, however, so those who do not have a handicap may want to park in Vulcan’s parking lot located at 1701 Valley View Drive and use the staircase to walk through the park down to the trail to meet us.

As always, remember to bring plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. If you have binoculars, please bring them—we’ll have only a limited number of loaners on hand.

Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible

Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.

Trip leader: Paul Franklin co-leads this trip with Freshwater Land Trust’s Carolyn Buck along with our Outreach & Communications Director Sarah Randolph. Her cell is 205-422-4124 (day of event only, please). You can email her if you have questions, or call 205-719-3678, opt. 3.
