The Exploring Natural Alabama series (formerly Audubon Teaches Nature) returns to Oak Mountain for its twenty-eighth year with seven great programs covering a broad range of Alabama natural history. Co-sponsored by Birmingham Audubon, the Alabama Wildlife Center, and Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, these programs are free, family friendly, and open to the public. Join us!

Cahaba Invertebrates: Why They Matter with guest speaker Randy Haddock

With 50 species of freshwater mussels, 124 native fish species, and 24 native species of freshwater snails, the river is well known for its great freshwater biodiversity. But have you ever stopped to consider what is the source of all this diversity of species? As with any ecosystem, the base of the food chain supports all those creatures in the layers above it, and for this reason, a clean and healthy Cahaba is dependent upon the invertebrates that inhabit the river. Join Randy Haddock, Field Director at the Cahaba River Society, as he shares his expertise about the Cahaba River and why we should care about the invertebrates that call it home.

The details: This program will be held at the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, just across the street from the Alabama Wildlife Center (404 Terrace Drive, Pelham, Alabama 35124). Cider, punch, and cookies are available starting at 1:30—come early for conversation and refreshments! Note that while the program is free, admission to Oak Mountain State Park is $5/adults, $2 for children (4–11) and seniors (62+).
