Each year, Birmingham Audubon offers financial support to young researchers working on Alabama-related conservation and biodiversity projects. Our February Monthly Nature Program will feature presentations by two such scientists: Kenny Jones and Richard Borthwick, recipients of our 2017 Walter F. Coxe Research Grants.

Mr. Jones’ passion for science stems from a natural curiosity about ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. He is a graduate of Arkansas State University with a BS in Wildlife Ecology and Management, and is currently pursuing an MS in Conservation Biology at the University of West Alabama. His presentation will focus on Coal Darter conservation using molecular strategies.

Mr. Borthwick began his career as a wildlife biologist after completing his BS with a double major in Natural Resource Management and Wildlife and Fisheries Management from the University of Northern British Columbia. He has been working with and banding songbirds since 2006. For his MS, he studied avian responses to mine reclamation techniques on reclaimed surface mines in Alabama. His PhD builds on his ecological expertise and seeks to further the knowledge of Cerulean Warbler population structure. He works directly with Dr. Yong Wang, a well-respected ornithologist, and has been banding birds through Alabama A&M University since 2012.

Reception starts at 6:30 p.m., talks run from 7–8:30 p.m., in the East Room on the second floor at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
