Great Backyard Bird Count: Ruffner Mountain
February 17, 2019, 8:00 am–10:00 am

Seasonal bird counts have been a central part of Birmingham Audubon’s work ever since its founding in 1946. This year, we’re continuing that tradition with four great counts, including two field trips in support of this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count.
The second of these half-day trips takes us to Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve for a fun morning spent counting our city’s winter birds.
The details: Meetup is at 8 a.m. in the main Ruffner parking lot, located on the northwestern face of the mountain, at the far end of 81st Street South. As always, remember to bring plenty of water and snacks, binoculars, rain gear, and seasonally appropriate (i.e., warm) attire. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be cancelled. You may contact the count leader the morning of the event if the weather is questionable.
Accessibility: Parking lot and deck are wheelchair accessible
(Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.)
The birds: We anticipate seeing wintering and resident songbirds, sparrows, and Hermit Thrushes. You’ll find the latest eBird records for Ruffner here and the Alabama Birding Trails site here.
Count leader: Paul Franklin leads this trip. Paul’s cell is 205-542-7647 (day of count only). Email the Outreach & Communications Director with questions.
