Seasonal bird counts have been a central part of Birmingham Audubon’s work ever since its founding in 1946. This year, we’re continuing that tradition with four great counts, including two field trips in support of this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count.

The first of these half-day trips takes us to the Birmingham Zoo for a fun morning spent counting our city’s winter birds.

The details: Meetup is at 8 a.m. in front of the Children Zoo entrance to the right of the main entrance, accessible from Cahaba Road (2630 Cahaba Road). As always, remember to bring plenty of water and snacks, rain gear, and seasonally appropriate (i.e., warm) attire. If you have your own binoculars, you’ll definitely want to bring them along. Email the Outreach & Communications Director if you need to borrow a pair.

Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible

(Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.)

The birds: We anticipate seeing wintering and resident songbirds and sparrows. You’ll find the latest eBird records for the zoo here.

Count leaders: Greg Harber and Jessie Griswold co-lead this trip. Greg’s cell is 205-807-8055 (day of count only).

More information: To learn more about the Great Backyard Bird Count, visit the Cornell Lab of Ornithology or National Audubon. Can’t join us in the field? Click here to learn more about how you can participate at your home feeder!
