With thousands of ducks and a good number of loons, the deep waters of Lake Guntersville deliver excellent waterfowl birding throughout the winter months.

The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. at the Food Giant in Pinson (6662 AL Hwy. 75), located off I-20 E/I-59 N (Exit 134 for AL-75/Roebuck Parkway). Turn left onto AL-75, and Food Giant will be on the left after about eight miles. From there, we’ll caravan and carpool to the City of Guntersville waterfront parks.

If you need to meet us in Guntersville, we plan to arrive at the McDonald’s there between 8:15–8:30 a.m. (1745 Gunter Ave.). Our first stop at 9 a.m. will be at the Guntersville City Harbor, which is located south of the US 431 bridge over the Tennessee River/Lake Guntersville. There is a parking area on the right just before the bridge.

As always, remember to bring plenty of water and snacks, a tank full of gas, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate (in this case, warm) attire.

Accessibility: Wheelchair accessible

(Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.)

The birds: We expect to see lots of waterfowl and even some gulls. You’ll find the latest eBird records for the lake here.

The food: Bring your own picnic lunch, and we will eat together at the Senior Center.

Trip leader: Greg Harber and Susan Barrow lead this trip; his cell is 205-807-8055, and her cell is 205-253-8667 (day of field trip only).
