Exploring Natural Alabama: Glow in the Dark Critters

The Exploring Natural Alabama series (formerly Audubon Teaches Nature) returns to Oak Mountain for its twenty-eighth year with seven great programs covering a broad range of Alabama natural history. Co-sponsored by Birmingham Audubon, the Alabama Wildlife Center, and Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, these programs are free, family friendly, and open to the public. Join us!
Glow in the Dark Critters with guest speaker David Frings
Have you ever been in the woods at night and witnessed the pulsating, flashing light of a firefly? Or perhaps been to Dismals Canyon and observed the eerie glow of a glow worm? Or maybe you’ve had occasion to gaze at a fungus under the beam of an ultraviolet light? One thing all of these organisms have in common is their ability to glow in the dark. David’s program will delve into the dark world of bioluminescent critters, where light is generated by chemical means. This will be a fascinating program you won’t want to miss!
The details: This program will be held at the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, just across the street from the Alabama Wildlife Center (404 Terrace Drive, Pelham, Alabama 35124). Cider, punch, and cookies are available starting at 1:30—come early for conversation and refreshments! Note that while the program is free, admission to Oak Mountain State Park is $5/adults, $2 for children (4–11) and seniors (62+).
