Join us for January’s Monthly Nature Program (“Conserving Webster’s Salamanders on the Natchez Trace”) with special guest, Thomas M. Mann, Mississippi Natural Heritage Program Zoologist at Jackson’s Mississippi Museum of Natural Science.

After completing his undergraduate work at the University of Miami in 1972, Mr. Mann studied the impact of development on nesting and hatchling sea turtles in southeastern Florida, where he earned his master’s degree from Florida Atlantic University in 1977.

As the Natural Heritage Program Zoologist, he has been involved in general surveys up and down the scala naturae, with a special attention to the distribution and abundance of gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus), Mississippi diamondback terrapins (Malaclemys terrapene pileata), Gulf salt marsh snakes (Nerodia clarkia), Alabama red-bellied cooters (Pseudemys alabamensis), and Florida harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex badius). More recently, and in collaboration with Dr. Debora Mann, he has studied previously unknown migratory behavior in Webster’s salamander (Plethodon websteri), as well as morphological variation across much of its range in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.

Reception starts at 6:30 p.m., talk runs from 7–8:30 p.m., in the East Room at Birmingham Botanical Gardens.
