Come along with Birmingham Audubon as we debut a new field trip to the lush woodlands of southwestern Blount County. We’ll begin with a morning of casual birding on the idyllic streets of Blount Springs, a private, 450-acre community about halfway between Birmingham and Cullman. Then, after lunch, we’ll visit Rickwood Caverns State Park for a birding walk around the one-mile Fossil Mountain Loop.

The details: Meetup is at 7 a.m. at the Fultondale Chik-Fil-A (215 Howell Street, Fultondale), located off I-65 (Exit 267) on Walker Chapel Road. From there, we’ll caravan and carpool north to Exit 287 and Blount Springs.

Entrance fees at Rickwood Caverns State Park are $3 per person, so be sure to bring along some cash.

As always, you’ll also want plenty of water and snacks, insect repellent, rain gear, sunblock, and seasonally appropriate attire. Since part of this trip involves a moderate walk through the woods, comfortable shoes are a must.

(Questions about accessibility? Email us for more information about how we can meet your needs.)

The food: We’ll plan for a lunch at the historic Top Hat Barbecue, a Blount Springs institution celebrating its fiftieth year in the pork-and-sauce business.

The birds: Migrating Broad-winged Hawks are a good possibility, as are an assortment of migrating warblers in their harder-to-identify fall plumages. You can check out the most recent eBird checklists for nearby Rickwood Caverns State Park here.

Trip leader: Greg Harber leads this trip; his cell is 205-807-8055 (day of field trip only). For more information, email the Outreach Director.
