Gosse Nature Walk #5: Bessemer’s Watercress Darter National Wildlife Refuge

As an early spring comes to Birmingham, we’ll gather to explore one of the smallest, most urban national wildlife refuges in the country. Together, we’ll take to the walking trails that wind through the refuge’s twenty four acres, and look for the earliest of this year’s neotropical migrants. (What we probably won’t get a chance to see is the real star of the park: the tiny, endangered fish from which it derives its name.)

Join us as we explore this hidden gem just southwest of Birmingham!

From Interstate 459 take the Eastern Valley Road Exit (Exit 1). Take Eastern Valley Road north for approximately 6 miles. Parking is available on the left (west) side of the road immediately after the West Jefferson County Historical Society’s MacAdory House and before the stop light.

As always, Gosse Nature Walks are free and open to the public; just be sure to bring water, snacks, comfortable shoes, and seasonally appropriate attire. (We can provide binoculars and field guides, but encourage you to bring your own.)
