Mastering Winter Water Birds
Greg Harber provides a comprehensive look at all the birds you’re likely to encounter on or near Alabama’s winter waterways. Topics include identifying loons, grebes, geese, ducks, and cranes, as well as finding reliable populations of these birds in the greater Birmingham area. Field trips will supplement classroom learning with real-world experience.
Textbook: The National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America will serve as the text for this course; while we encourage students to bring their own, more than enough copies are available for use here in the office.
Where and when do we meet? The course meets on four Mondays (1/7, 1/14, 1/28, 2/4), 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Birmingham Audubon offices, located on the second floor of 3720 Fourth Avenue South. (Ample and well-lit parking is available in back, just behind the former Saigon Noodle House.) Class will not meet on MLK Day (1/21). Field trip dates and locations:
- Saturday, 12 January: Birmingham Audubon field trip to City of Guntersville waterfront parks, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Saturday, 19 January: Birmingham Audubon Tom Imhof Memorial Beginner Bird Walk to Wheeler N.W.R., 7 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Saturday, 02 February: Birmingham Audubon Field Trip to Coleman Lake, Talladega National Forest, 7 a.m.–5 p.m.
- Saturday, 09 February: Class-only field trip to local city parks: Avondale, Patton, East Lake and Roebuck Spring, 9 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
Cost: Your one-time registration fee ($50/members; $75/non-members) covers all four meetings. (While you are not required to attend each class, do note that we cannot refund individuals for partial attendance.)

During that time, he has served in various capacities, including as a chapter officer and on several committees (Bird Counts and Education, among others). He currently serves as chairman of our Field Trips committee.
